United Kingdom Document Guidelines

The UK government's Home Office has unified most immigration and identity verification workflows through the UK Visas & Immigration (UKVI) system. Their digital photo standard is relatively generous — accepting files from 50 KB up to 10 MB — but it enforces strict biometric guidelines: the photo must be at least 600 pixels wide and 750 pixels tall (portrait orientation only), and it must be taken against a plain cream or light grey background.

A uniquely British rejection trigger is the background colour rule. UKVI explicitly rejects photos taken against a pure white background (which is acceptable in the US or Canada) — the UK standard requires cream or light grey. This catches many applicants who use the same passport photo for multiple countries.

For immigration applications, many supporting documents like bank statements and payslips must be uploaded in PDF format. UKVI allows up to 50 MB per supporting document file — making it one of the most generous portals — but many employers and banks issue PDFs that are inadvertently too small or too compressed to be legible when UKVI staff zoom in for verification.
